With a wide range of language-learning products now on the market, it may seem hard to choose between them. Here's a tip: Berlitz Communicate & Connect French is definitely for the serious, adult user. While it does have some language games and gizmos, this program takes dedication and commitment.

Communicate & Connect French is easy to install. You can practically walk away from your computer while it sets itself up. Four CD-ROMS are included with the program, and you will need to keep them handy while you navigate the lessons. The program also installs AT&T Connect and Shockwave along with the language software.

The strongest features of Communicate & Connect French are the lesson plans, which include a lesson book and syllabus. We highly recommend that you read through this material before starting on the program. The included information will give you a head start, which is important, as this program is not conducive to aimless browsing.

Berlitz Communicate & Connect French's weakest point is the microphone and recording options. Recording your voice is complicated and stilted. It takes some time to learn the rhythm of the program and what you're supposed to record. While it does include a microphone, it doesn't assist the user in setting it up. We had to search through the help section to learn that one must go through a setup process. While this may be apparent to an experienced computer microphone user, it's not so basic to a novice. Also, make sure you have a high-quality sound card for recording your voice, or you will not be pleased with the sound quality.

All in all, Berlitz Communicate & Connect French can be a strong tool in learning a new language. Just make sure you have the time and inclination to dedicate to this program, or you will tire of it quickly. --Kendra Hayden

There are also little characters that come along and help you during your play, in my opinon the game is very easy to use and contains alot of words to kick start your way to learning French but there is maybe a need for more complicated words so you can have a good conversation but its great for beginners. Instant Immersion Spanish is one solution: a set of four CD-ROMs that will take some of the pain out of learning new Spanish words simply by being quite a bit more fun than flash cards. In addition, the package includes the "Who Is Oscar Lake?" CD-ROM, a kind of interactive story game where different people give you clues to a mystery you must solve--all in Spanish. This will be entertaining for anyone who has had about a year of Spanish already, kids and adults alike.

The software package includes two other skill-level-dependent CD-ROMs. For absolute beginners, you'll start with the "Talk Now!" CD-ROM and learn basic words contextually for colors, food, numbers, and basic phrases. You hear the Spanish pronounced while an image of the concept is shown. Most teachers actually prefer this, so that students associate the Spanish sounds and words directly with a concept rather than the English translation. Intermediate students will start with the "Word Talk Spanish" CD-ROM, which has a variety of games to practice vocabulary and a few more dialogues; you can also take dictation exercises or use your computer's microphone to repeat after the audio and compare your pronunciation to the recording. (It's painful, we know, but it helps.) The fourth CD-ROM is "Webster's New World Five Language Talking Dictionary"--a nice perk for pronunciation practice but not a real replacement for your handy Collins Gem.

Caveats: First, the various CD-ROMs are not truly sequential, so do not necessarily expect to graduate from the beginning and intermediate CD-ROMs to the Oscar Lake game. Second, the software is no ersatz for a competent Spanish teacher and loads of homework, so do not expect similar results. The pedagogical approach here does not emphasize student production of Spanish, either in speech or writing, so you will learn more to recognize spoken and written words and phrases than to speak or write them yourself. Overall, however, Instant Immersion Spanish is a strong and, above all, affordable vocabulary-building resource--and it will take the doldrums out of memorizing new words. --Erik Macki

Each graduated lesson works like this: First, you learn a new word by seeing a picture of, say, a man. You then read the Japanese word for "man" (at different points, both in Roman letters and in Japanese script) and hear it spoken. After learning a whole set of words this way, you move into self-quizzing mode, where you see just a picture of a man and you have to choose the right word, either from spoken or written cues. This emphasis on listening comprehension is fantastic and is one of the components that sets the software apart, but there are also reading and writing exercises.

So how do they cover grammar? Japanese has a complicated system of counters attached to numbers. Eventually, for instance, you'll see hitotsu under a picture of one man and futatsu under a picture of two men. Later you'll see hippiki under one fish and nihiki under two fish. If you are a grammar guru, you might be able to figure out that humans are counted with hitotsu-futatsu, and small animals are counted with hippiki-nihiki. However, the beauty is you don't have to be a grammar guru at all because the software doesn't expect you to state rules like that; it expects you only to associate a picture of two fish with nihiki instead of futatsu. Eventually, you get into longer phrases that cover verbs, adjectives, and prepositional phrases. It's amazingly effortless, especially so for children as young as 6.

Caveats: The CD-ROM includes both Mac OS and Windows versions. Your installation will include the first-level lessons of a couple dozen other languages for free, too, so you have to know that the Japanese word for "Japanese" is Nihongo in order to select it from the list. Also, remember that software is no replacement for Japanese-speaking people, so take what you learn and use it in the world! --Erik Macki
